[ENDING] ... sometimes, things just end.

"Mother."

When the pain hit her, just outside of Boston, she'd pulled her car to the side of the road and put her head on the steering wheel. The ache in her chest was deep, the tears threatening to fall -- which would have upset him, she knew -- and she carried on. No tears, no sentimental thoughts. Simple deep breaths until she reached the edge of town.

Her boat, the Stubborn Viking, rested in its spot at the edge of dock nearest the house and she smiled upon seeing it. It was a comfort to her and she stepped out of the car, leaving the music box on the front seat.

Stepping inside, she caught sight of Clotho in a rare spot of melancholy herself and tilted her head in confusion. In her mother's hand was a small pewter arrow that Brighid had never seen, only heard about and yet, it seemed odd for the Spinner to currently have it in her possession.

"Mother," Brighid said again, stepping closer. "Are you all right?"

"All things come to an end," Clotho said without turning from her view of the sea.

Brighid stopped where she was and folded her arms over her chest. Talking about Bruce or mentioning Audr's death was useless; her mother was aware, had seen both events before they'd happened, so she remained silent until she recalled what the arrow was for.

Only then did she feel a true sadness. "Shall I cancel the flowers, Mother?"

"I think it would be best."

Brighid nodded, then let her own gaze fall on the tulips that were visible from where she was sitting. A vivid purple this month and the sight made her smile before she said, without looking, "Should I go?"

"At one time, there was love," Clotho said suddenly, before nodding, waving a hand in her daughter's direction.

Taking the hint for what it was, Brighid stood and lifted a small purple flower from the vase in the kitchen. Using the backdoor as an exit, she wandered down the beach to the edge of the water. The clouds over Cutler were uncommonly dark grey for the summer months and Brighid bent to remove her sandals before dipping her toes in the water.

She knew the precise moment that Fate changed that which it shouldn't; the moment that the Maiden became that once more. The skies above the small town cleared and Brighid dropped the purple flower into the water before turning to go back inside.

The arrow had disappeared from the Spinner's hand. Brighid was not surprised - after all, once Anteros' arrows were used, they vanished as to destroy the evidence. Love unrequited, love's vengeance... so cruel. Without the burden of love, Clotho's demeanor wasn't much changed, but Brighid could tell the difference.

"Beautiful flowers," Brighid said, brushing a fingertip over the edge of the tulips still in their vase.

Clotho looked up from where she was sitting in from of the Loom, her disinterest in anything but her Work evident. Her knowledge of the Captain was intact; her love for him was gone. The blank look made Brighid ache for yet another loss and she waved a hand, bending to kiss her mother's cheek. "Nevermind, Mother. I'm going to town. I'll see you later."

On the drive to the Richardson's store where she'd acquired Eve, her cat, she called the florist her father had arranged the monthly tulip arrival through and, thanking them graciously for their time, canceled it.

Instead of stopping at the general store, she kept on driving. She left the boat, she left Cutler, she left everything... and just drove.
