Brighid: a history

Throughout her short-ish life, Brighid had been warned to stay away from the water. Or, as her father had put it, to look toward land. One day, she not only ignored those warnings, she then smarted off to Poseidon. He snatched her up and took her to his place under the sea and attacked her. Eothian and Audr walked in after the beating and halted any further damage. Eothian tells Audr to take her to Hawken.

Audr then came to check on her before nightfall - a very scary time in Hawken's realm. Flesh eating fog and creatures that made howling noises and all kinds of who-knows-what, really. He calls her Poseidon's whore, she takes offense, he doesn't really care and... well. He finds out she's NOT a whore, that she was (until he got his hands on her) a virgin. Morning comes and he doesn't want to let her go. Lots of longing looks... And Eothian realizes who she is and knows who Audr is, but doesn't say anything because it's too late. And it's over, right?

Eothian takes Brighid home, but Audr can't let it go. He goes and demands to know where she was taken and Eothian, knowing what he knows, refuses to tell. Because Audr has the Captain of Poseidon's Guard as a close friend, he'll just call in a favor and use his minions to track her down. Eothian can't have that as Brighid's father IS that Captain. He tells Audr where she is: Maine. Audr goes to get her and he tells that he wants her to come with him to Norway. He loves her, she'll be well taken care of. They spend almost a week in bliss until her father tells her that he wants to meet this man that has her in such a whirl. At the same time, Audr has decided that (after 900 years), he wants to marry. He invites his brother to come meet the woman and that meeting is a disaster. Immortals, Greeks and Gods - it doesn't matter. Audr throws them all out, but not before calling Brighid all kinds of names.

Unable to ask her father where Audr is and not knowing Eothian can help, she asks Poseidon, who drops her in the middle of a literal firefight between the head of a major drug cartel and the Mexican federal police. The head of that cartel, Audr, is using a grade school as hostages and when Brighid tries to stand her ground, he shoots a little girl in the head to insist that she leave and then follows that up with murdering a pregnant woman to drive his point home.

Lachesis is the one that retrieves her from the side of the road in Mexico and takes her to Tennessee. There, Brighid stays on her aunt's farm for a month, reflecting on what she knows about James Audr: the man he'd been to her and the man he truly was. His friend Fin had told her that the weak run from his life, but it was then that Brighid decided that she wasn't weak, but she wasn't an idiot either.

Her father, Breacan, comes to her in Maine once she's returned and asks her to come to Poseidon's Temple and to wear something pretty. She does as he asks and it turns out to be a set up for another meeting with Audr. It doesn't go well and she (and Audr) are not happy with Breacan. Unlike Audr, she can't stay angry with her father.

Her mother, Clotho, has her drink from the river Lethe to make her forget what she's seen and experienced. Unfortunately, her dreams won't let her and she catches glimpes of him there. About that time, she makes a deal with her father. If she can make him smile and laugh at any point over the course of a month, she wins. If not... well, she doesn't win.

The consequence to losing that bet is a day of sailing... on a boat that her father gifts her. Once on the water, however, he has Eothian drop off Audr, and then the two of them disappear, leaving Audr and Brighid alone. He is pissed, she doesn't quite remember who he is. He can't resist her and the deck is used. Twice. He tells her how much he loves her and that he's sorry before he sends her to bed. There she has a dream where she remembers everything.

Once the boat decides to return to shore, she finds her father there, dressed in the cloak of the House of Lochlann and ready for battle. She and Audr say goodbye and he tells her that he can't change how he loves her anymore than he can change how he hates that they're so closely related. Then he tells her to find someone else to love. She, in turn, thanks for father for what he tried to do and watches as they leave to fight the battles of Hell.

Several weeks after her father and Audr leave, Brighid falls ill. Not ill, actually, but pregnant. With her mother's help, the pregnancy goes quickly and she has an easy birth with an unlikely birth coach. When Audr returns, he is told he has daughters and he refuses to acknowledge them.

It is at his statement that he take risks for love. that she gets angry and calls him a liar. She confesses to a dark secret: that she gave in to Poseidon one night when he came calling. In response, Audr shows up at her house, throwing beer bottles and demanding to see her. She very nearly gives in to his kisses right there, but she tells him that he told her to move on and he leaves when he hears a baby cry, promising to send someone to repair the house. She doesn't sleep for three days.

When the girls are two years old, Lachesis takes the girls to the farm and weaves their thread to age them to seven over a weekend. When they come home, Brighid allows them to go outside to play and they go missing. She calls Audr to help her find them and, while he's been avoidant off and on over the last eighteen months, he's not at all pleased someone else has upset Brighid - or made off with his daughters.

It takes 12 hours, but the girls are located in Hawken's Realm... and they're now 21, as time moves differently there. Audr makes a deal with Hawken to have the girls returned and they come home.

Now brilliant fighters with fae skills, the girls (Astrid, Brenna, and Calista - the ABCs) have begun to mimic the Fates in personality and ability. Who they become will remain to be seen.

With nothing left to tie her to Cutler but sentimentality, Brighid decides to make a life change.

It was at that point that she decided to take a road trip and... here we are.
